Awareness Initiatives
ACCF has been working with government and non-government institutions in Assam to build capacity for health promotion and cancer awareness.
- Police department- enforcement of COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Acts)
- National Service Scheme (NSS)- school and community sensitization with the help of NSS member students
- Education Department- for tobacco-free educational institutes, tobacco-control curriculum in academics and conducting pledge ceremonies against tobacco consumption
- National Health Mission-
- Tobacco control cell– awareness and training on effects of tobacco, steps for quitting tobacco addiction and self-detection of oral cancer
- NCD screening cell- screening and early detection of non-communicable diseases
- Faith based organizations- for tobacco free community-festivities and cancer-awareness activities
- Non-government organizations- Collaboration for community outreach activities and patient support
Engagement Campaigns
Run and ride- A mega event themed around ‘Beat Cancer’ to create buzz around ACCF and cancer awareness. Held over a period of 11 days, the event comprised of runs and bike rallies. A distance of 3500 Kms. across 7 North Eastern states was covered. People across age groups came forward to participate in the campaign. The event received phenomenal response from media.
Tobacco-free festivals- ACCF collaborates with community festivals in the state and the region for tobacco-free festivities and cancer awareness. Sankaradev Sangha, is the largest socio-cultural-religious festival in the North East India having a reach of over 20 lakh. Together, ACCF, NSS (National Service Scheme) and DTCC (District Tobacco Control Cell) worked towards tobacco control activities and creating importance of screening for early detection of cancer. A 12-acre tobacco free zone was created, 15 awareness kiosks were set-up to spread cancer awareness sessions amongst attending followers. Awareness sessions are being conducted for attendees of Raas Leela celebrations, which witnesses a turnaround of 20000.
Cancer walkathon- World Cancer Day Walkathon to raise the understanding of risk factors of tobacco and importance of early detection of cancer. 3000 students and professionals from over 40 institutes participated in the walkathon, multiple print and electronic media channels covered the event; this eventually led to a surge in people showing up for screenings in the region.
World cancer day- Observed on 4th February every year, World Cancer Day, is a leading international awareness initiative. The theme, 'I Am and I Will', signifies that signifies that everyone has a role to play and should feel responsible in reducing the global impact of cancer. ACCF works with cancer survivors on radio programs focusing on importance of screening in early detection of cancer. Cancer awareness and anti-tobacco poster competitions for college youth not only judges their level of awareness and also prods them to know more.
