Why Palliative Care Unit

In India due to low awareness about cancer, a large proportion of cancer patients report at an advanced stage of the disease, where definitive treatment options are highly restricted. Managing symptoms, enabling patients to improve quality of life and living pain free, are a few goals of palliative therapy.

Assam Cancer Care Foundation has also joined in this world-wide endeavour and aims to provide relief of suffering to those in need through its Palliative Care Units in medical colleges of Assam.

2. Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Jorhat
3. State Cancer Institute, Guwahati

With the commissioning of ACCF facilities, the units will be shifted to the new world class facilities.

How will Palliative Care Unit help

A large number of people die with pain and suffering that can be avoided with adequate treatment. Limited access to pain medications, lack of palliative care trained health professionals, weak national level policies on palliative care are few important areas to be addressed to improve accessibility to this form of care.

In ACCF's Palliative Care Units, care is provided through an interdisciplinary team of trained professionals comprising of trained physicians and nurses, social workers, and spiritual care providers. Modalities like Expressive Art Therapy, Yoga, Meditation and host of other activities are undertaken for the benefit of patients and their caregivers.
