CME: Seminar on management of oral cancers - An update

Under the aegis of Assam Cancer Care Foundation and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH), a CME on Management of Oral Cancers - An update was held at FAAMCH auditorium on October 24, 2021. The programme was attended by Prof (Dr) BC Goswami, Director - State Cancer Institute, Guwahati; Prof (Dr) Amal Chandra Kataki, Director - B Barooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati; Prof (Dr) Ramen Talukdar, Principal & CMS – FAAMCH, Dr Sajal Sen, Chief Operating Officer - Assam Cancer Care Foundation; Faculty; Post Graduate Students and senior nurses, of the medical college.

The aim of the CME was to bring forth maximum updated and recent knowledge; discuss and deliberate various options for treatment and management of oral cancer. Various subjects like Epidemiology and Screening; Surgical Anatomy of Oral Cavity; Management of Oral Cancers: Diagnostic workup / Surgical interventions; Radiation and Medical Oncology interventions; Recent Advances & Future Directions were discussed in the programme. Experts from Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) Mumbai and Army Hospital R&R - New Delhi also participated in the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kataki stated – "this is a very important area of discussion pertaining to Assam because the rate of prevalence is very high and there is a requirement of keeping updated. This is a very good initiative." Dr Goswami in his speech said – "SCI, Guwahati and ACCF is committed to provide best possible treatment and surgical interventions for the people of Assam. There is a continuous need for discussing different kind of cancers prevalent in Assam, particularly oral cancer, amongst the medical fraternity and there should be no hesitancy in discussing suspecting cases for early detection.".

Prof (Dr) T Kannan Medical Director, ACCF Barpeta, ensured that the medical college will be benefitted by the upcoming ACCF Cancer Centre and even now there is a deep collaboration between the doctors of FAAMCH and ACCF, and they are working together. Col (Dr) Sajal Sen - COO, ACCF, briefed about ACCF, governance, structure and future plans particularly in the area of research and academics.
