             Spring

             Arrives

             Barefoot

             In the courtyards of Assam,
             spring arrives barefoot,
carrying the fragrance of nahor flowers
through tea gardens, Dr (Major) D. J. Borah
where tired hands gather green leaves Medical Superintendent
with quiet dignity. Tezpur Cancer Centre
             The Brahmaputra flows patiently,
             having witnessed kingdoms fade,
             borders divide
and generations carry loss. Spring understands
Yet spring still ties a gamocha that survival itself is sacred.
around the wind, So she blooms softly
while cuckoos sing from bamboo groves on the edge of conflict,
and the sound of pepa rises like memory. placing kopou orchids
Beyond the hills, into weary hair,
the world burns with conflict and fear. teaching that gentleness is not weakness.
Children learn hatred too early, Perhaps spirituality is simply this:
and nations sharpen pride like weapons. to keep planting rice
Still, ordinary people search for kindness while the world predicts ruin,
between headlines and sorrow. to sing Husori through broken times

In Assam, and to believe compassion can still survive.
a fisherman still lights a lamp before the river, Tonight, beneath moonlit tea estates,
a mother still prays beside the tulsi plant, spring waits patiently, like Assam itself,
and the azaan and naamghar hymns for humanity to remember
still travel through the same sky. that no border is greater
Tolerance here is not an idea. than the distance
It is people sharing tea during sudden rain, between hatred and compassion.
             smiling through hardship
and standing together when floods arrive.
