Common myths and facts
Who is at risk? When to consult:
Everyone is at risk of skin cancer. Fair-skinned
people with a history of sunburns are at increased
risk, but it can affect people of all skin tones. In our
country, increasing outdoor exposure, changing
lifestyles, environmental factors and delayed
diagnosis all contribute to its rising burden. Skin
cancer often develops silently, and a small or
persistent spot may be dismissed as harmless until
it becomes more advanced. Farmers, construction
workers, traffic personnel and athletes, who face
prolonged sun exposure, are especially vulnerable.
Other risk factors include severe sunburns, fair skin,
blonde or red hair, blue eyes, a weakened immune
system, increasing age, multiple or unusual moles,
a family or personal history of skin cancer, and the
use of tanning beds.
