Role of a Palliative Nurse
in the Community
am working as a palliative nurse in the community outreach program at the
I Assam Cancer Care Foundation.
Palliative care involves supporting people suffering from life-threatening diseases
and their families—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our work is centred
around villages, where we educate people about cancer prevention. We encourage
the public to avoid tobacco and drugs, advise women on menstrual hygiene
and health matters, and conduct screenings for breast, cervical, and oral cancer.
Additionally, we check for non-communicable diseases and provide essential
home care for those struggling with serious illnesses.
I would like to share a case from my experience.
CASE DESCRIPTION: MAHMAD HUSSAIN
To document and assess the case of Mahmad Hussain, diagnosed with esophageal
cancer, and provide appropriate health education to the patient, family members,
and the ASHA worker for improved care and management.
Mahmad Hussain, a resident of Sensuwa, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
After her diagnosis, I visited her home with ASHA worker Perbin Begum to assess
her condition and provide support. She was referred to the Dibrugarh Cancer
