Tobacco use in its many forms increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, including mouth ulcers, gastrointestinal
issues, cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and kidney or liver disorders. Alarmingly, 90% of oral cancers are attributed to
tobacco habits, and tobacco consumption accounts for 40% of India’s disease burden. Each year, nearly 1 million lives are lost
to tobacco use in the country.
We revisited the home a month after our initial visit. The woman had responded well to localized treatment. The ointments
and antibiotics had worked wonders, and during observation, the white lesion had significantly reduced. Her decision to quit
tobacco had expedited her recovery, uplifting her spirits and bringing a cheerful smile to her face.
Each interaction reminded us of the resilience and stories etched into the lives of those we meet. With a sense of fulfillment
and gratitude, we left the serene environment of the old age home, knowing that our efforts had brought a touch of health and
comfort to their lives. This experience left an indelible mark on our hearts, inspiring us to continue serving with dedication
and compassion.
