curse or punishment. Others avoided her, fearing the disease might be contagious. People from the village avoided visiting
Sophibala’s house. Whenever someone visited her house, she was forced to stay quarantined.
One day a health awareness programme was held at their village organized by Kokrajhar Cancer Centre outreach team. The
team educated the villagers about breast cancer, its causes, the signs and symptoms and the importance of early detection.
After the session ended, a group of women informed us about Sophibala’s disease and we visited her house along with the
CHO and ASHA worker.
We found her in a bad condition . We counselled her and her family for getting proper treatment done at the hospital. We also
shared a government scheme about financial subsidies for medical treatments. They agreed and started the treatment at the
hospital.
Throughout Sophibala’s case we experienced that our cancer patients not only face physical challenges but also navigated
emotional and financial hurdles. The compassionate care provided by the hospital staff, combined with the unwavering
support from family plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of hope and reminds us of the importance of communication in
healthcare.
